 Verbal communication is the use of words to share information with other people. It can therefore include both spoken and written communication. Verbal communication is the use of sounds and words to express yourself, especially is contrast to using gestures of mannerisms (non-verbal communication). An example of verbal communication is saying "No" someone asks you to do something you don't want to do.

What is Verbal Communication

Verbal Communication refers to the production of spoken language to send an intentional message to a listener. Verbal Communication involves the use of words of speech or auditory language to express emotions or thoughts or exchange information. Non-Verbal communication involves the use of visual or non-verbal cues such as facial expression, eye or body movements, gestures, and many more without speaking. We use Verbal Communication to define everything from ideas, emotions, experience, thoughts, object, and people. Think about how you defined yourself.



Four Types of Verbal Communication

Intrapersonal Communication: This form of communication is extremely private and restricted to ourselves.

Interpersonal Communication: This form of communication takes place between two individuals and is thus a one-on-one conversation.

There are 10 types of non-verbal Communication: environment, appearance and artifacts, proxemics and territoriality, haptics, paralanguage, chronemics, Kinesics, and eye contact.

Opening Communication

Open communication occurs when all parties are able to express ideas to one another, such as in a conversation or debate. Some benefits of open communication include transparency, team building and increased profits. Open communication allows your employee to be more engaged and understand that what they do matters in the success of the business, Effective communication seems simple, but it does take effort. Management should communicate their goals a well as those of the company.

Both Partners have to be consistently open with each other, communicating honestly. Better communication between you and your partner leads to more trust in each other, and better trust leads to more confidence. Effective communication techniques help to make you and your partner feel secure.

Basic Verbal Communication Skills: Effective Speaking and Listening

1. Effective Speaking: Effective communication is defined as verbal speech or other methods of relaying information that get a point across. An example of effective communication is when the person who you are talking to listens actively, absorbs your point and understands it. Communication skills are needed to speak appropriately with a wide variety of people whilst maintaining good eye contact, demonstrate a varied vocabulary and tailor your language to your audience, listen effectively, present your ideas appropriately, write and concisely and work in a group. Speaking skills are the skills that give us the ability to communicate effectively. These skills allows the speaking, to convey his message in a passionate, thoughtful, and convincing manner. Speaking skills also help to assure that one won't be misunderstood by those who are listening.

2. Active listening: Active listening is the process by which an individual secures information from another individual or group. It involves paying attention to the conversation, not interrupting and taking the time to understand what the speaking is discussing. Active listening builds strong relationship and, while it may not come naturally to many of us, it's an invaluable communication skill. Becoming an excellent listener will take determination and practice and it will be well worth it in both your professional and personal life. Listening strengthens relationships and demonstrates attentiveness, caring and respect. Listening is more than just hearing, however. To truly listen, you must give your undivided attention and put your own agenda and needs aside. For many people being able to speak without interruption is like a release.

Improving Verbal Communication

Try not to take everything personally, and similarly, express your own needs and opinions in terms of the job at hand. Solve problems rather than attempt to control others. Speeches, presentation and announcements are all forms of verbal communication, as well as casual conversation between friends. There are three types that govern or control your use of words. Syntactic Rules- govern the order of words in a sentence. Semantic Rules- govern the meaning of words and how to interpret them (Martinich, 1996). Contextual Rules- govern meaning and word choice according to context and social custom. Some of the key components of verbal communication are sound, words, speaking nd language. At birth, most people have vocal cords, which produce sounds. According to the seven Cs, communication needs to be: clear, concise, concrete, correct, coherent, complete and courteous. In this article, we look at each of the 7 Cs of communication, and we'll illustrate each element with both good and bad examples.
